Join St. John's Holy Name Society

The 2nd Sunday of every month at the 7:30AM Mass. Communion breakfast and business meeting right after mass.
Who are we?
Men of St. John’s: The St. John’s Holy Name Society would like to invite you to participate in one of the oldest men’s organizations in the Catholic Church.
Pope Gregory X, in 1274AD, is credited with “…commissioning the newly founded Dominican Order to concentrate its efforts on preaching greater devotion to the Holy Name.” And “…in 1564 Pope Pius IV instituted the Confraternity of the Most Holy Name…”
Through out the years the Society has taken many forms within the life of parishes. As a child, growing up in Mt. Vernon, the Our Lady of Victory HNS was the organization that took care of major fund raisers, sponsored the Nocturnal Adoration Society, participated in the running of the annual bazaar and performed other functions requested by the pastor. This was typical of the smaller urban parishes of New York City, the Bronx and lower Westchester and may still be so today. The HNS and the women’s Rosary Altar Societies had been the main stay for establishing and providing the man/womanpower of the many service groups now functioning in the larger parishes.
Here at St. John’s and other large parishes in the sprawling suburbs, most of these organizational services are already being performed by a multitude of groups. This allows the Holy Name Society to take on a newer and more spiritual complexion by encouraging men of the parish to participate in an annual retreat, become regular attendees at First Friday Nocturnal Adoration and attend the monthly Communion Mass and Breakfast Meeting.
In our parish, you can find Holy Name members active in almost every organization. But unlike the past, these men didn't COME FROM the Holy Name Society but CAME TO IT. Our meetings are always filled with parish discussion on almost every subject affecting our parish. We have members from the Parish Council Committees, the Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers, CCD teachers, Right To Life members, active Knights of Columbus, RCIA, Baptismal & Prayer Groups, etc. If you ever want to know what is happening in our parish, come to one of our meetings.
Over the past few years there seems to be a spiritual awakening, especially among Catholic men. We feel that we are providing a vehicle for men to express their spiritual nature without feeling embarrassed or unmanly.
Won't you make the time to join us on the second Sunday of any month from September to June at the 7:30 AM Mass (exception: the May meeting is held on the first Sunday in May). Participate in the celebration of our religion's greatest mystery and partake in the Holy Eucharist. Then meet for a cordial and interesting breakfast meeting. We are generally finished before 9:45AM.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Fred Johnson (845-628-6485) or any Holy Name member.
